Who does it and how long it takes

Our dental team, after an exam by one of our general dentists.

In-office whitening takes about 90 minutes. Take-home trays are worn for about two weeks.

What happens

  1. An exam first: whitening is not started over decay or gum disease.
  2. We note your current shade, so you can see the change for yourself.
  3. In the office, a whitening gel is applied in several rounds while your gums are protected. At home, you wear custom trays with a milder gel.

Afterward

  • Avoid coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco for 48 hours if you can.
  • Whitening fades over time; a touch-up at home keeps the shade.

Side effects and risks

  • Temporary tooth sensitivity and gum irritation are common for a day or two.
  • Crowns, fillings and veneers do not whiten, and some stains respond little. How many shades change varies from person to person.

Alternatives

  • A professional cleaning alone often removes surface stains.

Insurance

Whitening is cosmetic and not covered by dental insurance. Check your benefits before you book.
