Preventive care
Exams, cleanings and check-up X-rays, twice a year, for every age.
Book onlineWho does it and how long it takes
A dental hygienist cleans your teeth and one of our general dentists does the exam.
About 60 minutes for a check-up and cleaning; 90 minutes on a first visit.
What happens
- We ask about your health history and any medications, because some change how gums bleed or heal.
- Check-up X-rays when they are due, usually four small films once a year.
- The hygienist removes plaque and tartar, then polishes and flosses.
- The dentist checks every tooth, your gums, your bite and the soft tissue of your mouth, and screens for oral cancer.
- You leave with a written list of anything we found, what it costs and what can wait.
Afterward
- You can eat and drink right away.
- Gums can feel tender for a day after a cleaning if they were inflamed.
Side effects and risks
- Dental X-rays use a very low dose of radiation; tell us if you are or might be pregnant and we will postpone them.
- Some sensitivity after polishing, which usually fades within a day.
Alternatives
- Seeing us once a year instead of twice. Fine for some adults with healthy gums; we will tell you honestly if that applies to you.
Insurance
Most dental plans cover two exams, two cleanings and check-up X-rays a year at or near 100%. Check your benefits before you book.
