Fillings and crowns
Tooth-colored fillings, crowns and root canal treatment, planned with a written estimate first.
Book onlineWho does it and how long it takes
One of our general dentists, with a dental assistant.
A filling takes 30-60 minutes. A crown takes two visits about two weeks apart.
What happens
- We show you the X-ray and explain why the tooth needs work, and what happens if you wait.
- You get a written estimate before we start, with what insurance or the plan is likely to cover.
- The tooth is numbed. For a filling we remove the decay and fill the space with a tooth-colored material.
- For a crown we shape the tooth, take a scan, fit a temporary crown and place the permanent one at the second visit.
Afterward
- Wait until the numbness wears off before eating, so you do not bite your cheek.
- A newly treated tooth can be sensitive to cold for a few days or weeks.
Side effects and risks
- Sensitivity after a deep filling, and occasionally a tooth that later needs root canal treatment.
- A crown can loosen or chip over the years and may need to be replaced.
Alternatives
- Watching a small area of early decay with fluoride and better cleaning, when the X-ray allows it.
- Removing the tooth instead of saving it, with the cost of replacing it later explained.
Insurance
Fillings are often covered around 80% and crowns around 50%, after your deductible and up to your annual maximum. Check your benefits before you book.
